The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) must be completed prior to submitting your scholarship applications.]
Analysis of financial resources available to help fund postsecondary education is of great benefit to students planning to continue their education after high school. The Western Indiana Community Foundation recommends all students complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA will give you an Expected Family Contribution (EFC) (EFC will soon become SAI – Student Aid Index). The information will help you be prepared for when you apply to your college or university. A majority of colleges require students to complete the FAFSA to receive any type of federal, state, and or school based financial aid. It is strongly recommended that all students at any high school grade level in Fountain and Vermillion Counties complete a FAFSA as early as possible to help you plan financially for college.
Any student that is applying for a scholarship through the Western Indiana Community Foundation that includes financial need as any part of the selection criteria, is required to enter the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) amount from a completed FAFSA form. You will be considered ineligible for need-based scholarships if this step is not completed.
Below are instructions to help you complete the FAFSA online:
- Gather the following information: - Your and your parents federal tax return and W-2s - Birth dates - Dates parents were married, separated, divorced or widowed - Value of checking/savings accounts and investments - Value of business or investment farm - Child support paid or received - Workers compensation benefits - Other untaxed income such as housing/food/living allowance for clergy - Veteran’s non-education benefits.
- Go to the FAFSA application through the Federal Student Aid website (link is listed below) and complete the FAFSA for the year you will be attending school.
- When finished entering data you will get the. Make a note of your Expected Family Contribution (EFC) number and enter any colleges (if you would like to see an estimated cost of education.
- Save a copy of the page showing your EFC amount by clicking the “Print/Save PDF” box or do a screenshot and save the file on your computer where you can retrieve it. You will be asked to attach a copy of this FAFSA completion page to confirm your entered EFC amount.
