The historic courthouse murals were painted using the al fresco method used by Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel (oil on plaster). The Wabash River Sketch Club took on the task of painting the 2,500 square feet of murals under the direction of hometown boy and world-renown muralist, Eugene F. Savage. The project took almost two years to complete, costing the county a total of $5,000, and the murals have maintained a priceless appraisal value.
The murals include a variety of nationalities, types of housing, native animals, transportation modes, foods, celebrations, clothing styles, wars, schools, bridges, courthouses, and the list goes on and on.
Nowhere in the world do murals totaling over 2,500 square feet portray the settlement and development of the country and area. Additionally, the murals were painted by female artists at that time not considered professional artists-ten of the eleven artists were women.
Age, climate conditions, and aging infrastructure of the courthouse have taken its toll on the murals over the last 77 years. Professional conservation is now needed to assure their existence as a record of history for future generations.
The initial fundraising goal is to raise $227,000 to restore the historic murals with a long-range goal of raising an additional $100,000 to establish an endowment fund that will be used in future years for the preservation, conservation, and promotional activities related to the murals.Historic Sites of Fountain County Fund
